Save the tigers or let them die

I read somewhere that it was the year 1411 AD when Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah. Then around a month ago, I found another significance fact about this figure when all the news channels started flashing the menacing news that there were only 1,411 tigers left in India. And now every individual is being urged these days to do their bit in saving the life of tigers in India, in fact on earth. Be it school, college, government agencies or India Inc, overnight, ‘Save The Tigers’ campaign gave their social responsibility drive a twist. Saving the tiger became an issue of national pride suddenly.

Major reason behind the killings of tigers is probably each tiger fetches Rs. 2 crore in international market as everything from the cat’s bones to the teeth has a value. I agree that killings should be immediately stopped and Wildlife Act 1972 should be amended in a manner to include stricter punishments for poachers and this law should be vehemently implemented. But apart from spending crores of rupees on Save Tiger Project advertisement, our government should also work at the grass root level to improve the lives of tribal people who are tempted by external agents to kill tigers for a few hundreds bucks.

Project Tiger sometimes call the tiger an indicator of our ecosystem’s health. I am not very much convinced with the idea because there are many more animals that are the part of our ecosystem and ecosystem cannot lose balance if specie, 1411 in numbers, extinct. I feel that evolution is an ongoing process, and in this process many new species are formed and the others extinct. If not, we would have seen real Dinosaurs and Mammoths in the animated movies like Jurasssic Park and 10,000 BC respectively. Probably we would not have been here to see such movies if Dinosaurs still existed. Those species exited and paved way to new species like human beings otherwise could you imagine your existence with Dinosaurs, Mammoth and Archaeopteryx. If global warming, population and pollution continue to grow like this, we might also have to face the fear of extinction some day. We all have to admit that neither of the above mentioned things can be stopped completely, but we can slow down their pace and this way we can only prolong our survival. Later on someday we will go and some other specie would occupy the space vacated by us as nature is clever enough to find something to adapt to the changing environment. Every day millions of species are losing out which we have no account for. For now, it might be Tiger’s turn.

I repeat that I am against the killings of not only tigers but any other animal in the wild and it should be stopped immediately. But the way awareness is being extended for this government initiative, I never saw for any other thing in past. There are stern national issues like poverty, unemployment, child and adult education, but government of India never asked us to write blogs on those issues as it is being asked for Save The Tiger Project. Are we only and so much concerned about tigers because since time immemorial, this mammal has been considered royal and it is our national animal? Would saving life of 1,411 tigers improve the day to day life of a common man? If saving a tiger cost millions going into advertisement and generating awareness, I would rather be happy to let Tigers die and utilizing that money on other socio-economic issues.

In the name of excelling and outliving each other, we grow insensitive to our sourroundings and nature. I blame everything on globalisation and capitalism. capitalism rips off a country of it’s natural wealth and talent and makes the humans as economic slaves. There is always an urge to out live or outperform the other. This urge for materialistic things, overutilises the environment and natural resources causing an eco-imbalance. Anything and everything is measured on the monetary scale. We should act now or it’s never. Today it’s tigers and tomorrow and it’s something else that goes extinct!!

Anupam, Another thing you should take into notice is. Wild life preservation is equally important as the other national issues like poverty, unemployement etc.
You are missing the link, when you said that other social issues need to be prioritized. Wild life extinction means that there is a rapid deforestation which is making the animals to vanish. Deforestation leads to no rains which is nothing but arid lands. No fertile land makes the farmer cripple and poverty sticken. No production, no employment. Effectively we are forgetting the basics. One imbalance in the eco system will trigger another. We can’t afford to ignore any eco system element. It may be animals or trees or water etc

Hie Praveen, I am not directly coming to the point that social issues should be prioritized, I tried to form a link of events then came to this point. Okay, do you remember, when an initiative was taken on such large (and large) scale for any other issue. I am not saying that let the tigers die, but it is the satire on system that government initiatives will never motivate tribal and local poor people to stop cooperating and supporting poachers to kill animals. Such initiatives, coming on TV, internet and asking people to do their bit to stop this, will never achieve the motive, because such mediums are accessible to people like you and me, and I believe, You and I never kill a tiger. Go to the people in the remote areas, in jungles who help poachers, try to find out what forces them to do this and them eradicate the problem.
And ecosystem is never composed of only one animal. This is what I was saying in my blog, why only biased towards tigers. Only 1441 tigers cannot maintain the balance of such a big ecosystem. Now government says, save tiger project would eventually help in keeping the earth green, now tell me how many people understand this hidden meaning. Save Tiger Project, means, to most of the common people, to save ONLY tigers. Only you and I, know that “Saving the tiger project” means we save the forest since tiger cannot live in places where trees have vanished and in turn secure food and water for all. But do you really feel that they government advertisements on TV and internet clearly convey this message and this is the point where I have an objection.

Hey nicely written man. and well researched too. Its sad that we realize the need to do something only at the last moment or until after a major catastrophe has struck. Did u see that ad of the guy who used to sit in a canoe and wait for the floods…. the tiger wala. it was awesome man…As one man wisely put it

There is enough for a man’s need but there will never be enough for a man’s greed

    Hi Anupam,
It is true and we all love not only wild animals but all animals and birds in this environment. Do you have any idea on what a common man can do to save tiger. Because writing a blog only creates awareness not steps to protect them. This is not time for awareness but time for action before 1411 turns to zero.

I am eager to hear what a common man’s role… pls say

Really interesting work. Keep writing Anupam.

Of course saving each and every animal, be it wild or domestic is our duty as we are superior than all. Every animal kill other to keep ecosystem in balance. But if you aware of this, when tiger is not hungry they dont kill and this is how they maintain our ecosystem. Humans just kill for money and there is no other reason. Tiger is our national animal and probably the strongest one. Fear of tiger keep humans away from jungle and reduce human interference. So you can say, indirectly tigers are protecting jungle and the other animals as well. Imagine, if there is no wild animal in jungle, will all trees and small animal survive? No way….

Now talking about poverty in India….you know thousands of tourists come to India every year to see a tiger? This directly or indirectly providing so much employment to Indian people. I am a big fan of tigers and really want to see it once and for the same reason, i visit Pench National Park atleast 10 times in a year. Its a different matter that i never was lucky to see this amazing creature in jungle. But if you ever visited to these tiger reservoirs, you will see how much people pay to guides and safaris just to see a glimpse of it. Again, its providing employment….

If tiger extincts, nobody will go to safari. This will result in lose of jobs to many people. There are so many things which depends on these beasts. They control population of many animals by killing them. Imagine, thousands of deers or wild boars destroying crops.

Government is spending so much money behind these project because extinction of tigers is not natural as it was in case of dinosaurs. It is we who are killing them. 1411 is not a huge number. 32 tigers were killed in 2009 so you can calculate how fast will they disappear from earth. I dont know how many people have actually seen tigers in jungle, but i want to see it before i die.

Government alone cant do much. Its us who can actually save them. Spread awareness why they are so important and what can be done to save them. Poverty is not because of tigers, its because of our dirty politics. Poverty is a complete different issue and can not be compared with tigers. You rather should say, let the corrupt politicians die and be weathly 😉

So my dear friend, rather comparing tigers with poverty, spread the awareness. If you really want to improve economical condition of India, do something so that more and more people around the world would come to India as a tourist. Malaysia is the best example as a tourist destination. They have celebrate festivals everyday just for tourists. We atleast can save our tigers for rest of the world.

    Think about it…..

@sushthought: I completely agree with you, and appreciate your justifications.

@Anupam Singh: At the outset, I would like to say, this was the most irrelevant blog I have ever come across. Sounds rude but true. The figure 1411 AD with the tigers, but it is so irrelevant on this context!

And for heaven’s sake! What kind of “inane” comparison are you drawing? India has a billions issues spiraling every now and then. One issue gives rise to many more.
Suggest you to join a group “Stripey the Cub” on facebook and go through the links and albums/posts

Whatever you blog speaks has already spoken by a zillion guys, and you are doing nothing more than complaining. Rather than making your issues generic and working for a common cause, at least for now..will do you good.

Poverty, Illiteracy, Corruption, Ignorance are here to stay and they can’t be wiped out overnight but the figure 1411 may soon go to 411,11,1 ….and no tigers at all!!!!!

      Here is something for you:

Top Five Reasons Why You Must Act to Save the Tiger

Do you ever pay attention to WordPress’ auto-generated links?

Last but not the least, tigers will die and you shall be happy to see them, but money wud be dere and so would be socio-economic issues.

Hope you are “approving” my feedback!

Vish, I would definitely approve your feedback as I came to blogging with an idea to express myself and get the views of people around me in positive way.

Here I completely buy your comment Vish. If you could read my post, you will agree that I am firmly of the view wild life act should be amended in a way that poachers should get most severe punishment. Killings should be stopped at any cost. I am only against the kind of advertisement our government is into, they way they are generating the awareness. I read somewhere that poachers mostly involve local tribal or poor people to help them in this disgusting crime, so how such advertisements, blogs, TV, internet would spread awareness among them. Improve their life, they will themselves stop this heinous job.

I have read about Save Tiger Project and gone through the reasons explained by them that how saving tigers would in turn affect keeping mother earth green. But only tigers are not the part of ecosystem, there are many more things around. Only tigers do not run the chain of ecosystem, had it been like that then 1441 tigers were definitely not enough to maintain the ecosystem balance. I think I was completely mistaken. I am also of view to stop killings immediately, I would also not love to see fossils of tigers, but I am not happy the way government is creating awareness and feel it is more biased towards Tigers because they are magnificent animals and over to that our national animal.

South China tiger is the most endangered cat species in the world. They are so vulnerable that some scientists believe that they have disappeared in the wild. In captivity they remained 50-60, unfortunately, can not the mate among themselves, as are all related, so that they will soon disappear. They have disappeared because of human negligence and greed.
